This Week at Smiley's - July 10th - 16th

sidneyw1999

Hello! Thank you for visiting our blog! I have been 'wanting' to get weekly blog posts out for months and months - well instead of WANTING to, I figured out that I just need to DO IT. So, my goal is to post on Sat or Sun every single week! Please yell at me if I don't. Truly.

I'm going to start letting you know each week what Sid and our other volunteers and the animals have been up to each week. SO MUCH happens each week at Smiley's: adoptions, intakes, meet-and-greets, events, allll the daily cleaning and socialization and medical care for the animals, work for long-term projects, the administrative stuff - it is a lot, but it is so rewarding. So, if you have an inclination, I HIGHLY recommend becoming a volunteer. (Fill out this form; also ask to be added to this facebook group.) A HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers this past week!!

------

This past week or so Sid has been taking care of a BUNCH of kittens - a few of which were very recent emergency intakes. The littlest ones are Ron Swanson and Leslie Knope - they are both still being bottle fed. They also both may have life-long vision problems, or possibly might be totally blind in Ron's case, due to untreated eye infections. But they are THRIVING with Sid's love and care!

------

We are excited by all the adoption applications from an event we did at the Salon Professional Academy in Fargo - it was so great to have some of the kittens that are almost ready for adoption meet lots of awesome people!

-------

Smiley's is AT CAPACITY for cats, kittens, and dogs. And the waitlist is long. So we are on a push for adoptions! But the only real way to solve the issue of SO MANY animals needing help is to SPAY AND NEUTER!!! So Sid spent time coordinating schedules and appointments with the various vets that fix the animals.

The dogs at the rescue got a nice surprise this week: coffee-themed dog toys donated by Morning Glory - Flower, Coffee, and Gift Shop in Fertile, MN! Thank you!!! The animals really do need toys and activities and interaction for stimulation - it helps keep them calm at the rescue!

------

Agatha - had 3 kittens this week!!! They are perfect and she is such a good mom!!! They will be in a foster home before too long!

Today (Saturday) Sid is getting 6 animals fixed (Pepper the dog, Houdini the kitten, plus the alcohol kittens - Bailey, Whiskey, Gin, Hennessy). Thank you to Get Your Fix in Detroit Lakes, MN!!

I am pretty sure Sid is also picking up Beau - the dog from Anguilla (island in the carribean)! He was found as a starving stray; he is heart-worm positive and so would have been euthanized there. Marit Throntveit, an animal lover who fell in love with Beau, organized for him to travel to Puerto Rico, Newark, and then to us in Minnesota! You will see us fund-raising for his heart-worm treatment in the coming days and weeks. Most of the intakes are local, but we try to help anyone who reaches out to us!

------

Looking ahead to tomorrow: Sid will be busy with her deep clean of all the buildings!

------

Looking ahead to this coming week: we will try to post lots about Penelope, Morgan, and Clara - these nice kitties are all very ready to go to their forever homes!

Thank you to our volunteers and donors that make this work possible! You save lives.

Have a great weekend!
